JANE EYRE SYNOPSIS
Charlotte Brontë’s classic gothic romance is brought to life in Jane Eyre. This musical adaptation follows the independent, passionate governess Jane Eyre, through her harsh childhood after being left as an orphan to an uncaring aunt, through her employment as a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she meets the mysterious and magnetic Edward Fairfax Rochester, master of the house and warden of her pupil. Though drawn to each other, they are haunted by the ghosts of Mr. Rochester’s past, which threaten to enjoy any possibilities of a future of love or happiness for either. This Tony Award-nominated musical features a grand, sweeping score that transports the audience to a world of wild, ungovernable passion on the moors.

Pictured: Roles of YOUNG JANE (left) and HELEN (right).
CHILD ROLES (9-14 years old)
Adèle (9-14 years old) Adèle is Jane’s pupil at Thornfield, a precocious little French girl just under ten years old. When Jane first meets her, Adèle’s only been in England for a few months, and she’s never really been asked to study or apply herself; all she really cares about are clothes and getting attention by showing off her singing and dancing skills. Strong actress with spunk and personality, solid singer, with the ability to do a French accent.
Young Jane Eyre (9-14 years old) Full of soul. Strong and willful, with an intensity far beyond her years. Jane has been abused most of her life, and shown no love. When she becomes a pupil at the school, she is befriended by the kind Helen Burns. Jane learns how to love through Helen, which she continues to carry with her for the rest of her life. Must have a beautiful singing voice. SOLO SONG: “The Graveyard”.
Vocal range top: D5 / Vocal range bottom: D4
PLEASE NOTE:
Child actors selected will be cast in BOTH the roles of ADeLE and YOUNG JANE, and play the roles in different casts. This is to allow them to explore two completely contrasting characters, both of which are fantastic roles for advanced young actors. Adele is a comedic role and speaks with a French accent, while Young Jane is dramatic role and speaks with a British accent. A dialect coach will work with our actors on both of these accents. These roles also include physical acting, which we will focus on throughout the program. These cast members will also play schoolgirls, and be featured in all performances.
